Square Meal review of American Bar at the Stafford:
Staffed almost exclusively by Frenchmen, the American Bar doubled in size during last year’s refurb, but its quaint charms survive: signed photographs & a jumble of souvenirs suspended from its ceiling – donated by admirers as diverse as President Mitterand & Dolly Parton – have been returned to their rightful place. Whether in the forest-green lounge or on a leafy terrace in a picturesque cobbled mews, a Manhattan or a Dry Martini mixed by the butler-ish staff & served with utterly irresistible complimentary nibbles is an unmissable experience for London barflies. There’s also a fine selection of malt whisky, prestige wines, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, brewed by the Stafford Hotel’s northern owners, & hot & cold bar snacks. The clientele is a mix of sophisticated Americans & raffish London chaps in suede loafers. A definite contender for best London hotel bar.
