Square Meal review of Alastair Little:

Arguably the birthplace of modern British cuisine & minimal decor, this restaurant’s namesake chef has long since left, but it continues to please with ‘top-quality cooking & a relaxed atmosphere’. It’s a simple set-up: a three-course lunch for £38 or £2 more at dinner, served in a pale room enriched by bright canvasses for sale on the walls. The menu is printed out for each sitting & dated as such, though dishes tend to hang around for longer. There’s much to tempt: smoked eel, carrot & pea shoot salad with potato cakes to start, then organic salmon with seaweed, shrimps & caviar butter or Elwy Valley lamb with fatoush, goats’ cheese, broad bean & olive salad. Round it all off with chocolate tart with mint ice-cream & strawberries. Service is generally attentive but can become flustered at times.
