Al Hamra

It might be in the middle of Shepherd Market but there’s nothing souk-like about Al Hamra: this is an old-fashioned & well-established Lebanese restaurant, popular with a well-heeled international crowd & priced accordingly. While the decor might not be to all tastes – low ceilings, ruched curtains, dark-green colour scheme – staff are genuinely hospitable & the food is among the best of its kind in London. A meal might be constructed from a choice of almost 60 mezze, featuring old favourites such as falafel, stuffed vine leaves & fried chicken livers alongside more recherche dishes like fried lamb’s testicles. Vegetarians are well catered for while the presence of what are billed as ‘continental dishes’ – avocado vinaigrette, fried veal escalope – adds to the slight time-warp feeling. A large alfresco dining area is an added attraction in summer.
