This buzzy pub conversion is really more restaurant than gastropub, with a light & airy feel permeating its several seating & eating areas. Italy & Asia inform the selection of starters, so that a meal might kick off with beef carpaccio with rocket & parmesan or crispy duck spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce. For mains, prices & ambition range from the gastropubby – harissa-marinated chicken breast with sweet potato & Swiss chard for £14.95 – to full-on restaurant fare: roasted rump of new season Devon lamb with aubergine & almond skordalia & red wine jus for £18.25. The comfort-food desserts include creme brulee, sticky toffee pudding & tarte tatin. To drink, there are big-brand bottled beers, though if you’re eating, the wine list merits investigation, with interesting bottles from France’s less celebrated regions alongside New World crowd-pleasers.
