Square Meal review of Abeno:
With its modest facade & side-street location, Abeno would barely seem to merit a second glance. In fact this small, friendly Japanese restaurant offers something out of the ordinary: a rare chance to sample okonomiyaki or ‘Japanese pizza’ in London. It’s actually more of a thick, savoury pancake cooked to order in front of you by a friendly waitress on a hot plate that doubles as a table. ‘Okonomi’ means ‘as you like’, so you can choose from assorted toppings: the ‘London mix’, for example, offers pork, bacon, salmon & cheese. Once cooked, your pancake is dressed with Japanese mayonnaise, a fruit-based sauce (a bit like HP sauce), dried seaweed & bonito flakes. Don’t fancy it? Go for fried noodles, though that would be missing the point of coming here.
