Square Meal Review of Abeno ?

‘Omelette specialist’ may not be the sexiest USP in the business, but Abeno has chosen to build its trade around Japan’s hugely popular okonomiyaki (traditional, frittata-like offerings). The form is this: choose your fillings – anything from authentic squid, prawns & pork to a more westernised bacon & cheese combo – then watch as the whole lot is whipped up on a hotplate by a smiling chef. For non-believers, there are plenty of better-known Japanese options, including any number of stir-fried soba noodles, steamed rice balls, teppanyaki & salads. To finish, it’s worth taking a dip into the intriguing flavours of an exotic fruit salad with sweet rice dumplings on a base of red bean jelly. Japanese beer, plum wine, saké or a shot of shochu help keep throats well oiled.

Pic My Food :: Okonomi-yaki: the Japanese

Dining at an okonomi-yaki restaurant is a real culinary delight. And that't exactly what I got when I visited Abeno between Holborn and Tottenham Court Road, London. The moment you sit at your table, you know it's not going to be an ordinary meal. For a start, there's a big teppan hot plate in the middle of the table and you're politely warned by the waitress not to touch it. Then you look around you at the other tables and see that the waitresses and waiters are a lot more than that; they are also the chefs. What is okonomi-yaki? They're Japanese 'pancakes' with a batter and cabbage base, plus various other vegetable and meat toppings. It's not fully straightforward to explain, so thankfully the Abeno website has a picture guide...
