Square Meal review of 1 Lombard Street Brasserie:

There could be few better uses for a big old banking hall than this showy, stylish & rather noisy City brasserie, less formal than its sister restaurant & much appreciated for that very reason: while the fine diner is the place to impress, the brasserie is about letting off steam in civilised fashion. A long & eclectic modern European menu offers everything from a starter of grilled Provencal vegetables with rare tuna to something more carnivorous to follow: Angus fillet steak with seared foie gras, shallot confit & sweet & sour balsamic jus, perhaps. Puddings range from the pure comfort of rhubarb & Bramley apple crumble to the more exotic iced mango parfait with Thai syrup & lime sablee. The brasserie shares a wine cellar with the restaurant – prestigious bottles from the vault include a 1950 Chateau Pétrus Pomerol at a bonus-dependent £1,500 – plus there’s plenty by the glass & a short selection of half bottles. Service is efficient.

Wine List: This is a good medium-sized list, laid out regionally. Bordeaux & Burgundy stand out, although all bins are expertly chosen. Mark-ups are sensible, so if you trade up, bargains can be had: Burgundy fans won’t find a range of Domaine Leflaive’s outstanding Batard-Montrachets cheaper in London. There is an excellent range of 18 wines by the glass & a smattering of half bottles. Best Buy White 2004 St Péray, Bernard Gripa, Rhone Valley, France, £45.
