Square Meal Review of 1 Lombard Street Brasserie ?

First-timers can’t fail to be impressed by the sheer grandeur & scale of this teeming City brasserie beneath the spectacular dome of a listed banking hall. In contrast to the refined hush of the adjoining restaurant, this energetic venue – boasting a new reception area & swanky banquette seating – is a good choice for power breakfasts & client lunches, not to mention ‘head-thumping’, after-work carousing as the amber lights are dimmed. The eclectic brasserie menu covers most bases from full-flavoured Provençal fish soup or grilled calf’s liver & bacon to tuna tartare with aubergine caviar. Meanwhile, daily specials inject a seasonal note: superb fresh roast turbot accompanied by a frothy Champagne sauce infused with dill, for instance. The wine list eschews ostentatious extravagance in favour of a fine selection by the glass or carafe. Staff are ‘fun’, attentive & knowledgeable to boot.

There isn't much to really say about One Lombard St that makes it stand apart from the crowd of city bars/restaurants surrounding it. Except to say that service was of a good standard and attentive. Apart from this, it is a little lofty and so-so for my liking. The vast hall with its dome shaped ceiling is certainly impressive at first, but it also means a cold and uninspiring space that becomes less and less interesting the longer you remain in it. The wine list is as good as you expect it to be given its location however the food is more akin to an out of town Wetherspoons. If you are in town, you'd have a reason to pop in to this city stalwart but if your not, don't make the effort.

The first thing that struck us when we walked into the brasserie at 1 Lombard Street was the amazing domed ceiling ¬- we couldn’t help but be impressed by its grace and scale. It highlights a spectacular circular bar in the centre of the room where we enjoyed a couple of cocktails before sitting down for our meal. We instantly felt like we were part of something special and the feeling continued as we were guided to our table. There's a nice buzz about the place with couples chattering away and small groups of men obviously talking business. We really liked the fact the tables are well spaced so we could hear ourselves talk without having to listen to other conversations.
I start judging a restaurant by the quality of the bread it serves and here, it's freshly-baked and absolutely delicious. Next, the menu. My starter was easy: tartare of yellow fin tuna and Provencal aubergine caviar. It was the most expensive dish in this section but well worth it. My partner was equally impressed with his crab, prawn and avocado salad with bloody mary sorbet (I got a little menu envy here – it’s absolutely delicious.) For my main course I chose the calves liver and bacon and my partner went for the bangers and mash. Both of our dishes are faultless. We tried not to have a dessert but we couldn’t resist. In the end, we shared a fabulous lemon meringue tart with a tangy raspberry sorbet.
Our food was superb, the wine was well chosen by the sommelier and the service was attentive without being overbearing. We’d recommend 1 Lombard Street to anyone.

I love this place and frequently use it as a restaurant to take clients too, especially for breakfast meetings. The service is always very good, friendly and efficient but not too in your face like some restaurants. the quality of the cooking is spot on. Yes it can be expensive and the bill can add up but you definitely get what you pay for!

1 Lombard Street has been around for sometime and it has not lost any of the quality that it first started with.

There is probably a painter and decorator that would like to spruce the place up a bit, but aside from that there is nothing much wrong with the place.

The food is good, solid tasty and there is an extensive menu to choose from. It is obviously buzzing at lunch time as a regular city haunt but it is great for a drink in the evening and for good affordable dinner, if you live anywhere north or east.

I liked it so much I had my wedding reception there!

Great food, Great Service and Well Priced – for 150 People.

Great Canapes Sausages and Mash, tortelloni with truffle, tuna ceviche, saffron risotto with fennel

The Grilled Pave of Salmon with asian salad was perfectly cooked.

Chicken breast with chorizo and butterbean stew was tender and well balanced

The veggies had a seriously delicious wild mushroom, pearl barley risotto.

Tarte Tatin with elderflower sorbet to finish it all off

Everyone loved the food and is still raving about the venue and their skill.

I will of course be back and look forward to going back to the Michelin star restaurant in the back!

The restaurant looked tired and so did the food. I took a friend from Belgium in the hope to show her that british dining can be exciting and good. We went for the taster menu, which at 19.50 is cheap. But from the first dish onwards the disappointments did not stop. The pumpkin soup was bland, the salmon not fresh (it must have come straight out the freezer), the lamb very greasy (swiming in some undefinable bean jus), the granita was made with artificial pinapple flavouring and the consistancy was not right, the plates for the desert had been painted with the berry sauce about an hour before serving (this made the berry sauce dried and sticking to the plate)… overall simply disappointing regardless at what price. There are better deals out there in london at the moment, which do not compromise on the food.
