Square Meal Review of The Riverfront ?

This stretch of the riverfront is one of the South Bank’s most iconic under-bridge locations, where a sea of second-hand books & Benugo’s all-day bar & kitchen create a bottleneck of hungry & thirsty literates. There’s a hopping atmosphere here at weekends, when the terrace is prime people-watching territory (pick one of the civilised tables or lean back in a brightly coloured deckchair on the other side). The menu is typical of the Benugo chain, surfing the cross-Channel wave for salt beef & horseradish sandwiches, cottage pie, chicken Kiev & bavette steak. To drink, the large bar dispenses cocktails, a commendable choice of wines & a handful of draught beers such as Sharp’s Doom Bar or Duvel Green at higher-than-average prices (expect plastic mugs if you’re supping alfresco).

sexdrugsandbaconrolls :: BFI Resturant – Southbank

We visited BFI before attending a jazz evening at the Waterloo Vaults. The BFI restaurant is under Waterloo bridge right on the river. There are tables outside both in summer and winter (with heaters in the winter) and then a large restaurant on one side with the bar on the other. We had not booked but fancied a casual non chain restaurant affair – which is quite hard to find on South Bank. While it is owned by Benugo, being based in the BFI gives the place a real unique feel. The waitress thankfully found a free table for us and we sat and took in our surroundings. It is an open plan restaurant with the kitchen visible from the restaurant area. We took a look at the menu which is English in cuisine. Note the bar serves some fabulous bar snacks including squid, lamb kebabs and chicken thighs...

Rate My Bistro :: The Riverfront at BFI Southbank

So, as promised we went back to the newly refurbished BFI Cafe. The interior is all new and they have the separated seating areas: one for the restaurant and the other for the cafe/bar. I think that the bar area has tried to become all trendy and I don’t think it works. It has lost its charm, cosiness and its relaxed atmosphere. It is has become more of a bar than a cafe and I think that they are enough bars around! The lighting is dimmer, and its a real shame that they have taken away the high window seats that you could sit on and have views of the river. Also, the big wooden tables and benches that made up the outside seating have gone. This has been replaced with a hedge enclosed table and chairs area...
