Square Meal Review of Red Dog South ?

Judging by the buzz at this sibling to Hoxton’s Red Dog Saloon, Clapham is for carnivores: the restaurant is crammed full of young office workers, fervently worshipping at the altar of US barbecue. Inspired by the owner's travels across the States, Red Dog is an Americana alchemist, having concocted a winning blend of pit cooked meats (including brisket treated to 20 hours in a wood-fired smoker), an international range of beers and a bright, open-plan dining room and bar. Tender meat brims with sticky, tangy flavours but the smaller details, like delicious own-recipe meat sauces or even an unassuming Burnt End Pie side dish with moreish chunks of buttery pork, are equally good. Success in Clapham will enable expansion plans for the Red Dog pack, tempting wannabe cowboys to gallop straight to dinner.

Champagne and Chutney :: Red Dog South, Clapham

Yesterday was messy. Very messy. All we wanted to do was get into the foetal position and cry ourselves to sleep (exaggeration much?) this morning. Food is always the answer isn’t it? On that note, Tess suggested we try this relatively new place Red Dog South in Clapham. Its sister restaurant in Hoxton has been getting some great reviews serving up American hickory smoked ribs and according to the website, the ‘best wings in London’. It’s also been the talk of the town for its American food challenges the most popular one being the ‘Devastator Challenge’ which is a burger stuffed with 18oz chuck steak, 200g pulled pork, 6 rashers applewood smoked bacon & 6 slices American cheese. Finish this beast in less than 10 minutes and you get the burger for free (normally costs £22.75) and they even throw in a free t-shirt...

  2. Red Dog Saloon has been on Forks-Up’s “must visit” list for quite some time, but we’ve never quite made it there – due (in part at least) to the original branch’s rather awkward Hoxton location. But when a second branch (Red Dog South) opened up in Clapham, a mere stone’s throw from Forks-Up HQ, there was no stopping us. On arrival, we were struck by the décor – the spacious dining room has high ceilings and plenty of light floods in through the floor length front windows. The wood panelled walls, bedecked with animal horns and framed sepia photographs, and the low-hanging lamps, give the impression of a Wild West movie set. Against this backdrop, the somewhat over-loud “chilled house” music that pumped from speakers at every corner did jar slightly, but the overall atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed...
