Fans of Mark's Bar in Soho will dig Mr Hix’s similarly styled sibling on the City-Shoreditch border. Boho Britannia meets Brooklyn in Hixter's basement dive, which would work well as the location for a GQ lifestyle shoot – fuelled by a raft of fascinating drinks, of course. Creamy Black Cow Dorset vodka martini is served ‘dirty’, ‘twisted’ or ‘filthy’ (with pickled spicy/sweet peppers), the house zombie is a thriller, and gin punch à la Terrington is the sort of currently fashionable cup the Dowager Countess of Grantham doubtless downed back in her Downton debutante days. Interesting ales include Hix’s own-recipe brews and a trio from Scotland – Glaswegian St. Mungo lager is also appropriated for a Beefeater gin and Seville marmalade cocktail dubbed ‘disco'. Self-styled ‘snax’ run from smoked salmon and chive tarts, rock oysters and devilled chicken hearts on toast to bite-sized chocolate cake.
