Occupying the first floor above La Perla on Maiden Lane, laid-back El Nivel offers rare agave spirits and innovative Mexican tasting plates in a ‘Latin retro’ setting that aims to evoke the spirit of the 1930s and 1940s (the name references Mexico’s first cantina). Original artwork lines the walls, and the drinks list majors on exclusive Tequilas, mezcals, raicillas and bacanoras – including many from the private collection of expert Juilo Bermejo. There’s also a small selection of agave-based craft cocktails for those who like their spirits in new guises. Matching the booze in this self-styled ‘agaveria’ is a menu of tapas-style ‘antojitos’ featuring the likes of goose rillettes, meatballs with caramelised pineapple mole sauce, pork belly chicharones with teriyaki, sambal and sesame sauce or baked lobster and monkfish tails with lobster bisque and sangrita reduction.
