Square Meal Review of Holborn Dining Room & Delicatessen at Rosewood London ?

As well as the flagship Mirror Room, Rosewood London’s foodie offer now includes this smart British brasserie in what was Jun Tanaka’s Pearl. At the helm is ex-CEO of Caprice Holdings, Des McDonald, who has ticked off a roster of restaurant trends – from classic comfort food and native sourcing to Martin Brudnizki design. It may feel derivative, but the whole set-up has a welcoming air of familiarity and there’s nothing off-putting about the all-day menu either, with its breakfast fare, sandwiches, charcuterie, high teas and patriotic-sounding ideas ('hock and coq' pudding, anyone?). The kitchen delivers perfectly acceptable, well-cooked dishes – judging by our juicy roast langoustines doused in garlic butter, signature HDR burger and zesty St Clement's posset. Service should sharpen up over time, although nothing can dampen the buzz in the comfortable dining room, with its reclaimed oak, antique mirrors, leather upholstery and jaunty tweed detailing. The adjoining deli deals in hand-picked provisions and takeaway snacks.

The Hungry Porker :: Holborn Dining Room

Holborn is just about the last place in London I ever go. It’s even more corporate than the City. It’s basically the City without any of the good bars or restaurants. Instead it’s endless office blocks filled with faceless suits. People churning out an existence. But things are changing. There are plans to turn this into London’s equivalent of Midtown. A destination to go to, rather than a place where you feel the life sucked out of you as you pass through. There’s no surer sign of this change than the luxury Rosewood Hotel opening its door last year, and with it The Holborn Dining Room, a grand all-day brasserie that on looks gives The Delaunay a run for its money. The restaurant is huge. Think Brasserie Zedel but with less of that cold train station vibe...

  2. The first thing you’ll notice is the suit. It must have been quite a challenge to find an outfit that could hold its own in this glamorous, cavernous room but the maître d’has managed it, with aplomb. The self-styled HDR is the main restaurant of the new Rosewood Hotel, in that no-man’s land area of High Holborn known as mid-town. Decked out with plush red leather banquettes and well-spaced tables, this is an impressive room. There are a few high tables and stools which you could use for drinks and snacks, but they were all empty for the duration of our meal. As was much of the restaurant. Cocktails are a bargain for central London and it may be worth trying this for those alone. You could quite happily sit for a couple of hours after work, with a plate of charcuterie and a bottle of wine...

Samphire and Salsify :: The Holborn Dining Room

After the closure of the Chancery Court Hotel on High Holborn, the Rosewood has taken its place, and what a beauty of a hotel it is too. Housed inside this stunning building is the equally stunning Holborn Dining Room, which is the latest venture from Des McDonald – the man behind The Fish and Chip Shop in Islington. It was a huge restaurant which had a real brasserie feel to it; the type you could never get bored of sitting in. As I sank back into my red leather banquette, I felt like I was seated in a railway station in New York. There’s even a separate deli too which looks well worth a visit...
