Square Meal Review of City Social ?

Walking through Jason Atherton’s City Social is a bit like striding across the deck of a sleek, very sexy ocean liner: dark wood clacks underfoot, floor-to-ceiling glass affords dizzy views to the horizon and it’s possible to make an almost entire circuit of Tower 42 to take in the sights of the Square Mile and beyond. Overseen by chef Paul Walsh (ex- Restaurant Gordon Ramsay), the food is less fussed over than at Atherton’s flagship Pollen Street Social, with vibrant, artful presentation allowing the dishes to shine against the sombre brown and gold furnishings. A starter of creamy burrata garlanded with red and yellow heritage and heirloom tomatoes bursts with fresh flavours, while every element of the Creedy Carver duck with English berry chutney and shallots has matching deep-mauve hues. To finish, Atherton’s first sortie into the world of soufflés is a triumph, judging by our exemplary strawberry version – although we found the rum baba strangely uninspiring. As ever, knowledgeable staff are on hand to guide diners through the flavourful array of wines and cheeses.

    SamTheFoodFan :: City Social

    Very dear friends were visiting from Dublin last weekend and I wanted to take them somewhere special for dinner. Somewhere with a good view and where you're guaranteed good food - a perfect opportunity to try City Social. The seventh London restaurant by Jason Atherton, this one is an absolute stunner. Located on the 24th floor of Tower 42 in the City of London and having been to the previous restaurant that was in the same location, I was keen to see how different the space would be. City Social takes up the entire 24th floor and the 360 degree views of London are just incredible. I have also just loved every single one of Jason's restaurants. Surely I couldn't go wrong...

    Samphire and Salsify :: City Social, Tower 42

    Based in Tower 42, City Social is the latest restaurant from serial restaurateur Jason Atherton (he also owns Michelin starred Pollen Street Social and Social Eating House, along with Berners Tavern and Little Social). It replaces the old Gary Rhodes restaurant but the place is totally unrecognisable – thank God! To start, I opted for the pig’s trotter and ham hock with crispy Mrs Brown’s black pudding, apple and Madeira (£12) which was really enjoyable. The trotter and ham had a crisp breadcrumbed exterior with a succulent meaty centre which went perfectly with the sliced and puréed apple. I don’t know who Mrs Brown is but she makes a mean black pudding...

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: City Social

    Last Thursday saw the opening of City Social, high up on the 24th floor of 42nd Tower in the financial heart of London. Just one day after opening I find myself in Jason Athertons newest restaurant which wraps around the centre line of the tower, offering 360 degree views across London. Dining in a restaurant so soon after opening is risky business indeed, making yourself vulnerable to teething problems. In hindsight, it should have been obvious – if anyone knows how to open a successful restaurant it is Jason Atherton. Meeting our executive chef after eating his food (Pollen Street Social, Little Social, Social Eating House) is the cherry on the cake. In person the man is quietly charming and refreshingly humble. After witnessing the wankerisms of a whole host of chefs on their ego-caressing TV shows, it is easy to tar the whole profession with the same brush. For Atherton to be so modest is doubly impressive, considering the fact he spent the best part of two decades running restaurants with Gordon ‘vein-bulge’ Ramsay...
