Square Meal Review of Drakes Tabanco ?

The founders of Copita and Barrica have extended their Spanish crusade with Drakes Tabanco – an old-style sherry tavern offering exclusive tipples drawn direct from the barrel using a traditional ‘venencia’ cup. Among the choice sips, look for off-dry Rare Old India and 30-year-old Antique Palo Cortado from the renowned Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla; otherwise pick something from the ‘shop shelf’ or fill a bottle from the barrel of your choice. Those wanting solid sustenance should head to the back of the venue, where a menu of Andalusian-inspired tapas is bolstered by ideas from nearer home – think air-dried tuna, goose rillettes, Ibérico pork tongue, smoked scallops, gravlax and octopus stew. The venue takes its name from seafaring hero Sir Frances Drake – the first man to bring butts of sherry to England as contraband in the wake of the Armada.

    sexdrugsandbaconrolls :: Drakes Tabanco

    We arrived at Drakes Tabanco having heard this is a new, yet subtle Spanish tapas bar in Fitzrovia focusing on authenticity, simplicity and the people. We checked out the menu which is Spanish but has British inclinations too. The idea behind this sherry and tapas bar is that when Sir Francis Drake came back from his travels he kick started the sherry industry and so the menu reflects this era. The restaurant is small with a little sherry bar offering what they call ‘real sherry’ that is stored for years and is dry, and full bodied. Tabancos are unique as they are served sherry straight from the barrel and Drakes Tabancos serves just them. We were early but this did not seem a problem for the incredibly helpful Spanish waiters and they sat us down at a lovely table near another beer where they prepared cold food and sliced big legs of ham. The small restaurant is downstairs and is light with black and white prints of Spanish generations. I think as the place was so cozy, it would have suited to be a little darker and maybe use candles instead of bright lights...

  2. If you love spain, its food, tradition and its people then Jerez (sherry) is somewhere you have to experience. There is barely a British person in sight, and most of the locals don't speak English, so it really is a cultural change which leaves you struggling at first, but coming back with another tongue by the end of it all. Foie gras is common place, and so is the famous Spanish ham, Pata Negra - all at extremely low prices. When i heard of Drakes Tabanco opening up in the Fitzrovia area, i couldn’t have been more excited...

  3. Fitzrovia, that weird part of London north of Oxford Street, south of Euston, west of Bloomsbury and east of Marylebone, is overflowing with tapas restaurants. Barrica, The Salt Yard and Fino are well established, each with their own dedicated following. That hasn’t stopped Drakes Tabanco from setting up shop, with an odd menu combining Spanish and British influences and an extensive selection of cherry...
