London is currently in the throes of a gin revival, and Searcy’s new restaurant in the Barbican runs with the trend – although it’s a world away from a Hogarthian drinking den. Instead, the Gin Joint has a suitably corporate feel, with polite brown/grey colour schemes and a list of 40 different brands (more informative tasting notes would help drinkers). The bar dispenses Broker’s gin ‘on tap’ (a first for London), there are various gin-based cocktails, and the spirit even makes a few clever appearances on the menu – from a chilled cucumber and Beefeater gazpacho to a ‘G&T’ granita. Meanwhile, the Bertha grill knocks out chunky cuts of rib-eye and racks of Herdwick lamb served on wooden boards, while desserts might include sticky toffee pud or plum and almond crumble. Lunch and theatre menus weigh in at £16/20 (two/three courses).
