Soho Japan has moved from its base in a converted pub on Wells Street to a new home not far from Baker Street’s tourist attractions – although its downbeat vibe and keenly priced menu are unchanged. There’s a strong selection of small plates ranging from chilled beancurd with spring onion or fried aubergine with miso paste to deep-fried chicken balls flavoured with shiso herb or bite-sized breadcrumbed Japanese burgers, plus bigger helpings of salmon teriyaki, pork tonkastu and prawn tempura. At the other end of the spectrum, look for sashimi salads and classic sushi – perhaps yellowtail nigiri, spicy crab maki or pickled radish temaki. Also, check out the wholesome noodle soup packed with spinach, omelette and mushrooms. The drinks list offers a full quota of alcoholic tipples including wines, Japanese beer, saké and shochu-laced ‘chuhai’.
