DUE TO OPEN JULY 2014
Following recurrent problems and delays, Asia Pacific’s Shangri-La group is now hoping to launch London’s first ‘elevated’ luxury hotel early in 2014. Occupying levels 34 to 52 of the iconic Shard, the vast complex will boast all manner of leisure and business facilities, plus several eateries and Gŏng – a destination bar high up on level 52 of the building. Derived from the word ‘dougong’ (a system of interlocking brackets used in traditional Chinese architecture), its stated aim is to take visitors on ‘an aspirational journey infused with modern Asian sensuality’ – so brace yourselves. The interior will be divided into several boudoir-like chambers (cocktail bar, Champagne bar, swimming pool), with dragon-red cinnabar – famously used in Chinese Imperial palaces – as the defining colour throughout. Views of London’s skyline will add an extra frisson to the line-up of sunset cocktails and late-night drinks.
