Square Meal Review of Chop Shop ?

New York’s Altamarea Group has teamed up with Brit restaurateur Will Guess (of Rowley’s fame) for this meaty offering on the Haymarket strip. The restaurant’s vibe channels the industrial look du jour, with heavy-duty metal lights, bare brickwork and reclaimed tiles, plus a feature wall embedded with ferocious-looking butcher’s knives and cleavers. However, Chop Shop’s touristy theatreland location means that some of its Soho swagger has been toned down – the indie music is muted, while tattooed staff are polite and eager to please. The concise but comprehensive menu majors on pâtés, terrines and ‘incredibly tender’ sizzling steaks – although shareable jars of tangy prawn cocktail and thick, juicy pork chops with salty crackling and sweet roasted peaches are also on the money. Desserts such as peanut-butter brownie sundae are sure-fire hits too – as is the great-value set menu (£15/22 for 2/3 courses).

Samphire and Salsify :: Chop Shop, Haymarket

Chop Shop is based on that tourist infested bit of Haymarket that I rarely visit – you know, the road with Planet Hollywood and Tiger Tiger on it. The perfect antidote to all that naff-ness is Chop Shop, a newish restaurant backed by American restaurant group Altamarea and fronted by a lovely chap called Will Guess. I’d heard great things about the food, so when I received an email inviting me along (don’t shoot!), I accepted with very little trepidation. The ground floor dining room was a fairly long and narrow space; it had that ever-familiar warehouse feel, with plenty of exposed brick and piping. There was even a wall filled with butchers’ knives sticking out of it. The menu was a tad confusing; you could choose from snacks & bites, jars, planks and crocs and that was just for starters...

  2. I love me a good steak and I get excited whenever a steakhouse opens in town. I've been meaning to visit Chop Shop since its launch last fall but I've heard so many mixed reviews about it so, like a date you're unsure about, I kept flaking. Last week I had a chance to go on steak night date night so I finally got to visit. This restaurant is a collaboration of Chef Michael White (of 2-Michelin-starred Marea in New York) and local restaurateur Will Guess (Rowley's Steakhouse & The Rum Kitchen). It's butcher-shop inspired, highlighting chops and steaks NYC via London style...

Munch My Way :: Chop Shop, Piccadilly

Home Chop Shop is for me, one of the top places that will satisfy your carnivorous cravings. The restaurant is only a few minutes away from the tourist-packed Piccadilly Circus. The main attraction is the meat here as the name suggest. Sourcing from both the UK and USA. All look very appetising such as the starters of duck liver mousse served in jar to the Barnsley Lamb Chop or USDA rump steak.. But I went for the Express Menu which cost £19 for 2 course and includes their famous Hanger Steak...

  4. Sometimes you look at a menu and it stirs such excitement, only for the food itself to be a let down. The menu for the Chop Shop bought joy on all levels. Thankfully the food delivered on all levels too. The former director of Rowley’s, a young and fresh-faced Will Guess, has collaborated with the acclaimed New York based restaurateurs the Altamarea Group, alongside Michael White bringing a much needed quality restaurant to Haymarket. A road we often walk down with feelings of sadness, mostly mediocre chains line this central London street. From what we spotted during our visit, Chop Shop is not just luring in Londoners but tourists too. Finally!...
