Square Meal Review of The Lockhart ?

Originally set up by two Texan couples, this smart-looking venue specialises in upscale regional dishes from the southern states, backed by boutique regional wines from North American vineyards, a hand-picked selection of bourbons, Tequila, mezcal and US beers such as Lone Star. Acclaimed Brooklyn chef Brad McDonald now heads up the kitchen, and his revamped supper menu promises a refined spin on Southern cooking – think smoked mallard gumbo, venison saddle and roasted apple with ‘red eye’ gravy or stuffed quail with Madeira glaze, alongside down-home regional ideas including shrimp boil with new potatoes or pecan pie. Lunch brings some lighter stuff – catfish po’ boy with rémoulade sauce, buttermilk wedge salad, ‘muffoletta’ with salt and vinegar crisps etc. The venue is spread over two floors, with classic interiors and furniture from vintage markets (think antique sideboards and old railway benches).

  1. Yet another shiny new restaurant has come to Marylebone, this time in the form of modern, southern style Lockhart, who opened their doors last year. But why are you only hearing about it now? Well, its all down to the arrival of its new chef, Mississippi born Brad McDonald. For southern food in London, he really is the chef right now. No doubt he'll be in popular demand. Lockhart only three months ago was relatively quiet and unheard of. Now you'll be lucky to get a table. I dined on a Tuesday evening and as many people sitting down to eat, were also being refused a table - there just wasn't a free table in sight...

    Samphire and Salsify :: The Lockhart

    Based just a short stroll from Marble Arch and tucked away behind the haze of the hubbly bubbly pipes from the Edgware Road, Lockhart is a restaurant that specialises in food from the Deep South. But this isn’t just another junk food inspired restaurant; this is refined soul food. After a recent change of head chef to Brad McDonald and given the fact that I work round the corner, I decided to pop along for a spot of luncheon. The restaurant felt bright and airy with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wooden tables and a relaxed atmosphere. Our waitress, complete with a Texan accent, who turned out to be the head chef’s wife, was really lovely and the perfect host, along with a chap called Bunmi who’s worked at Dinner by Heston and Lima to name but a few...
