Square Meal Review of The Lockhart ?

Originally set up by two Texan couples, this smart-looking venue specialises in upscale regional dishes from the southern states, backed by boutique regional wines from North American vineyards, a hand-picked selection of bourbons, Tequila, mezcal and US beers such as Lone Star. Acclaimed Brooklyn chef Brad McDonald now heads up the kitchen, and his revamped supper menu promises a refined spin on Southern cooking – think smoked mallard gumbo, venison saddle and roasted apple with ‘red eye’ gravy or stuffed quail with Madeira glaze, alongside down-home regional ideas including shrimp boil with new potatoes or pecan pie. Lunch brings some lighter stuff – catfish po’ boy with rémoulade sauce, buttermilk wedge salad, ‘muffoletta’ with salt and vinegar crisps etc. The venue is spread over two floors, with classic interiors and furniture from vintage markets (think antique sideboards and old railway benches).

The Hungry Porker :: The Lockhart

When I think of southern soul food, I imagine a greased-up, smoky shack serving huge sloppy portions. Something like Freddy’s from House of Cards. A guilty pleasure sort of place where you get your fingers dirty. The Lockhart couldn’t have been further away from this. Set just off Edgware Road on a trendy little side-street it is clean white walls and chic vintage furniture. It all verges on being a bit cold and boring. What doesn’t help its cause is that the whiskey bar is downstairs and the open kitchen is hidden in the back corner...

  2. The Lockhart gifts London with this southern cuisine presented in a way that is uncommon around here, and one that is previously untouched by myself. For me, it is an example of exactly what makes the food scene in London so exciting. With Brooklyn born chef Brad McDonald taking over the kitchen in January this year, the Lockheart has become tremendously popular. After a few drinks at the close by Home House, we headed over to Seymour Street, a brilliant location for a good mixture of restaurants. In fact, The Lockhart is sat just next door to my favourite London based Basque restaurant Donostia. The beaten-tin ceilinged dining room is kitted out with mismatched vintage china, smartly scrubbed up tables and old railway benches. It’s very inviting with just a touch of buzz and energy yet not too much. We were fortunate enough to be sat on the only table overlooking the reassuringly calm and collected kitchen...

Munch My Way :: The Lockhart, Marylebone

The Lockhart serves Souther US States cuisine lead by Mississippi born chef Brad McDonald. I once heard of the Southern States cooking from TV shows such as Man vs. Food and Diners, Drive ins and Dives. Which those shows has got me very interested in trying such cuisine and was very lucky found a spot that serves that in London...

Samphire and Salsify :: The Lockhart

Based just a short stroll from Marble Arch and tucked away behind the haze of the hubbly bubbly pipes from the Edgware Road, Lockhart is a restaurant that specialises in food from the Deep South. But this isn’t just another junk food inspired restaurant; this is refined soul food. After a recent change of head chef to Brad McDonald and given the fact that I work round the corner, I decided to pop along for a spot of luncheon. The restaurant felt bright and airy with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wooden tables and a relaxed atmosphere. Our waitress, complete with a Texan accent, who turned out to be the head chef’s wife, was really lovely and the perfect host, along with a chap called Bunmi who’s worked at Dinner by Heston and Lima to name but a few...
