Square Meal Review of Grillshack ?

Backed by Richard Caring of Caprice Holdings (Scott’s, J Sheekey and so on), Grillshack is a modern take on the traditional American diner seen through a London lens. With its beatnik music and roll-top benches, the dimly lit dining room attracts Soho’s beautiful, but maintains its cool as customers lap up breakfasts, burgers, ice-cream sandwiches and free coffee refills. The main menu offers steaks, roast chicken and salads, although the standout is a non-greasy hamburger with tangy relish, ‘proper’ cheese and a brioche bun. Grillshack also has a few novel tricks up its sleeve: customers can order and pay at the counter, take advantage of the easy-to-use touchscreen or log into a tech-savvy app. Good-value beers and wines by the carafe keep bills down. For atmosphere, choose the buzzing ground floor over the more subdued overflow space downstairs.

    Nomface :: Grillshack, London

    Grillshack opened earlier this month on Beak Street, Soho. When Mr Nom showed me the menu, I latched my eyes upon the buttermilk apple pancakes and was eager to visit them for breakfast. I was up early for a change which did surprise Mr Nom since I’m not particularly a morning person, and breakfast usually becomes brunch. We were surprised how empty it was around 11am with only a couple of occupied tables...

  2. Grillshack’s so-called “all day grill” has recently opened on Beak Street in Soho and I thought I’d give it a go…It didn’t disappoint. Grillshack is Richard Caring’s new baby. Caring, occasionally referred to as the ‘Lex Luther of Mayfair’ in the tabloid press, owns a phenomenal collection of great clubs and restaurants in London ranging from Annabel’s and Soho House to Le Caprice and The Ivy. Recently, with the possible exception of Balthazar in Covent Garden many of his new enterprises (e.g., Dirty Burger, Chicken Shop, Pizza East) have been a little less luxurious but certainly more convenient. Grillshack continues in this vein...

    Quaff & Scoff :: First Impressions: Grillshack, Soho

    Grillshack is the latest addition to Richard Caring’s empire (he of the stable of brands that is Annabel’s, Soho House and Caprice), and press releases boast of an innovative ordering process that allows diners to pre-order and pay for meals online, at a touchscreen order station, or simply at the front counter. It is indeed a venue that aims to satisfy hunger pangs at all hours, with a breakfast menu that is served from 8 am until 11:30 am (from 10 am on Sundays), followed by an all-day array that then holds court until the closing time of 11 pm. The focus here is on ‘dude food‘ – the short list of offerings consists of a hamburger (£4.95), a rump steak (£9.95), half a chicken (£7.95) and the concessionary salad (£7.50)...

    Samphire and Salsify :: Grill Shack, Soho

    Grill Shack is an “all day counter order grill” on Beak Street in Soho and is the creation of Richard Caring who recently sold Côte Bistro (now there’s a chain I like) for a reported £100m – I bet he’ll have a good Christmas! We were seated in the ground floor dining room but there’s also a smaller room downstairs in the basement. It was nicely done out and the tables were quite closely packed together giving it a buzzy atmosphere...

  5. On the night we were invited to Grillshack, one of the numerous new restaurants that are to open this month, we read that the capital’s typical restaurant goer eats out 3.7 times a week. That’s more than us and we have a blog to keep up! It seems restaurants really are a massive trend right now – a trend that is impossible to keep up with. Grillshack is a ridiculously cheap all day grill on Beak Street, not far from another good value restaurant – Flat Iron. The man behind it is Richard Caring of Caprice Holdings, Dirty Burger and Chicken Shop. What makes it different to the rest is not just the prices but the ordering system. Stealing the idea that has lived in my head for the past five years in which you order via an app, or on the touch screen terminal point. My idea is a little more high-tech than this, unless I win the lottery this is where the idea will stay...
