Square Meal Review of Bumpkin Chelsea ?

It's a credit to the Bumpkin mini-chain that it manages to pull off its ‘country restaurant in the city' vibe without coming across as either too corporate or twee. Readers adore the branches for their ‘delicious' cooking and ‘homely', stripped-wood interiors – although the splurges of colour and deliberately folksy knick-knacks can be a bit OTT. Menu headings underline the kitchen's patriotic credo: ‘from British fields' might turn up a Gressingham duck salad with carrot, walnut and ginger cake, while ‘from British shores' could feature sustainably sourced Torbay sole with lemon and caper sauce. Pies, cheeses and puddings shamelessly wave the Union Jack, Sunday roasts get the thumbs-up from young families, and English bottles even sneak onto the wine list. Service can struggle at peak times, but Bumpkin still ‘ticks all the right boxes'.

    Drifting Epicure :: Bumpkin Chelsea

    As much as I want to explore more of London my food map is sadly still mainly focused around Soho and eastward with the occasional escapes to Mayfair/Notting Hill/Kensington for something over the top. The thing with London is that you don’t have to leave your area and still have more than enough good options no matter what you want to eat. So when I received an email from Square Meal about a blogger dinner at Bumpkin in Chelsea I got a good excuse to visit a more relaxed restaurant the other side of town. There are 4 Bumpkins around London: Notthing Hill, Chelsea, South Kensington and Westfield Stratford. The Chelsea branch has an outside dining area which is quite nice when the weather allows. About 10 people were gathered for this event, all new faces, all curious of what the evening might entail. The evening started with Pimm’s cocktails which together with the relaxed surroundings in the garden reinforced the arrival of summer. Judging by the crowd this evening it seems to be a popular place for families living in the area. The food at Bumpkin is centered around British produce presented with classic cooking...

  2. A couple of weeks ago I was thrilled to receive an email from Square Meal inviting me to one of their blogger dinners. We were asked to join them at Bumpkin in Chelsea to sample the new spring summer menu. I was totally thrilled and beyond excited! The day of the dinner dawned and due to my impeccable timing skills, which I have inherited from my parents (thanks guys), I ended up being almost half an hour late practically screaming at the taxi driver to go faster. I was off to a good start running into the restaurant and totally not keeping my cool...

  3. I admit it, I do occasionally judge a book by its cover! Yes, I tend to assume that Hugo Carbine-Smyth probably went to a nice university – may live South of the River – could even go home to his parents in their country pile. Therefore, when I was invited to a blogger event at Bumpkin in Chelsea – I wondered if I was wandering into a twee overprice haven for the terminally privileged. However, I can say not only was I pleasantly surprised but pretty blown away with not only the food but also the staff (how lovely is Katia? – hope I spelt that right) I arrived having trotted quickly through Chelsea (only getting marginally lost, due to my sense of direction which resembles a slightly dyslexic lemming) and found a restaurant which I can only describe as designed by Alice in Wonderland. Grass inside, an adorable Gnome on the table and little glasses of Pimms which did everything but come with a dormouse and a label that said drink me. With my events hat on, I could definitely see an afternoon tea for a select group of ladies with a few glasses of bubbles. Maybe a haven from the football?...

  4. Bumpkin is a mini-chain of restaurants operating in Central London; British produce is central to their food philosophy and they ensure that all ingredients are ethically sourced and sustainable. Having been to Bumpkin in Kensington, I expected a similar dining room. But I was wrong, Bumpkin isn't like your average chain of restaurants, each one has an individual style and design. Where Bumpkin Kensington is larger and pub-like, the main dining of Bumpkin Chelsea was rather smaller, cosy and quite romantic with lights twinkling in the window. And outside there's a gorgeous little secret garden...

  5. Reminiscent of more traditional English countryside restaurants, Bumpkin offers refuge from the contrasting surroundings of London, as it sits just off the lively Fulham Road. With the dining facilities spread over three separate areas, Bumpkin’s highlights include The Secret Garden outside (with access to The Chelsea Gardener), as well as a charming secluded top-floor function room, dubbed The Botany Club...
