Square Meal Review of The Fish & Chip Shop ?

With Des McDonald (former CEO of Caprice Holdings) at the helm, this concept was always going to be a bit posher than your regular chippy – just look at the antique shop front, reclaimed Victorian panelling, vintage leather booths and details such as willow-pattern teapots. The fryer delivers crisp, salty chips and sustainable British seafood coated in crunchy batter laced with beer from the nearby Beavertown Brewery – simply add bread and butter, a pickled onion and crushed peas for something close to nostalgia-wrapped comfort food. But that’s not all: the brown-paper menu also promises upscale offerings ranging from scallops dressed with fresh chilli and garlic butter to roasted Dover sole or sea bass with girolles and sea purslane. Staff and customers create a chatty, gregarious vibe, while varied liquid refreshment ranges from milkshakes, cocktails and Camden Hells lager to own-label Languedoc wines.

  1. Des McDonald (Ex CEO of Caprice Holdings who own The Ivy, Scott’s and J.Sheekey, amongst many others) has opened The Fish and Chip Shop in Islington. It’s not your standard chippy however, as it’s done out rather beautifully inside. There were two petite dining rooms to choose from; the first had small tables tightly packed together and the second out the back, which is where we were seated, had equally cramped booths. Even though we were squished, the whole place had a great atmosphere which was helped by the loud music and chitter chatter of fellow diners...

fatmanclaphand :: Fish & Chip Shop: off the scale

I've already written a Fish & Chip Shop review. They send you an email asking for your thoughts the very next day. In fact, they are very up on technology: you can book online and get a text straight away; the waiters all have iPads (more on that later); and their pricing is years ahead of 2013. By which I mean they must be predicting some pretty wild inflation, because I've never paid £70 in a fish and chip shop before. But then I've also never had such good fish and chips – except the one time I cooked them myself with spectacular results (see my instagram). The beer batter, made with Beavertown beer was light and crispy, the fish white as snow and fresh, and the mushy peas absolutely perfect, with just a hint of mint and lemon and a lovely skinless texture. The dish of the day, though, was starter – called "fried particulars" – which were, bafflingly, deep-fried mushy peas with soft ham hock in the middle. Only three came but I would have happily chomped through ten of them. Special praise should also go to the Knickerbocker glory dessert, which was as retro and ridiculous as I'd hoped...

SmellyLion :: The fish & chip shop review

I used to love a chippy tea. I have fond memories of watching saturday night TV classics like Big break and Bullseye lighting up the TV while I tucked into chips, a Hollands cheese and onion pie and gravy- all balanced on a plate on my knees- paper removed, we weren't total trogs :) And at 19 sat in my flatmates car with the rain pouring down on us, eating them straight out of the wrapper as we couldn't wait to eat our naughty indulgence! As I've gotten older the excitement around those early chippy dinners has all but gone, and they have gone from being a treat to something I usually only cave in and eat when I am carb loading on a hangover. Cue 'The fish and chip shop'! A recent opening on Upper St in Islington that promises a posher dining experience than your average chippy. Aside from the regular dishes you would expect are oysters, lobster, scallops and crab. I decided It would be rude not to pay them a visit and "dragged" a few of the guys I work with along to check it out...
