The team behind best-selling Chabrot Bistrot d’Amis have launched an imposing second site whose plate-glass frontage, black awnings and gold lettering are as effective as any tricolore in nailing its colours to the mast. Poised at the corner of Smithfield – hence its market-themed moniker – this spacious new offering suggests a smart brasserie rather than a cosy bistro, with red-leather seating, nostalgic photos and swirling metal lights livening up light, airy space. The kitchen concentrates on simple assemblages and southern French classics, leavened with favourites from the Knightsbridge original, such as slow-roasted lamb shoulder with fruit-studded couscous. Elsewhere, Chabrot’s signature home-cured salmon is spiced up with black-radish shavings, whopping steaks come with carefully cooked frites, and juicy prawns from the open char-grill are simplicity itself. Service is solicitous, with assured staff giving spot-on recommendations from the luscious wine list.
