Head down to the basement of the Well and Bucket pub and look for the swing doors with inset brass portholes. Beyond them lies 5cc – an intimate cocktail bar whose dishy decor is part Don Draper 50s cool and part Captain Pugwash’s cabin, with a pinch of Hawksmoor thrown in. Grab a high stool at the copper-topped bar or bag one of the cellar booths for ship-shape mixology that harks back to a previous golden age – think pre-Prohibition pours such as martinez and sazerac, classico Campari-based quaffs, and 20s speakeasy splashes like cosmo daisy. House mixes including li chi (lychee liqueur, raspberries and coconut rum) cost £9, but be aware that prices for other impeccable ideas are more W1 hotel bar than E2 basement. Alternatively, order bubbles, craft beers and oysters. A well-considered, eclectic soundtrack matches the sophisticated surroundings.
