An art nouveau, fairy-tale woodland clearing fashioned from découpage materials, the late-night lounge at Sketch looks like something from the original 1912 staging of Debussy’s L’Après-Midi d’un Faune. ‘Après-midi’ here means afternoon tea including exquisite pastries, scones, elegant crusts-off sandwiches and the finest Darjeeling; come dusk, however, the room morphs into an enchanted forest where lissom staff proffer exotic cocktails. Prices reflect the swanky postcode – ‘exclusives’ such as sweet ending (Zacapa rum, apple juice and Sauternes), and ginger bread (José Cuervo Tradicional Tequila, gingerbread syrup and melon liqueur) weigh in at £17.50, while slightly less pays for rosemary martini, pear bellini or message in a bottle (vodka, lavender, lime and lychees). Assuming you’re not on a tight budget in this fabulous fantastical glade, the message might as well be ‘call off the search party: we’re perfectly happy where we are’.
