Located in the vaulted crypt of St Matthews Church in Brixton, this tapas joint and good-time venue from the Antic London group has filled the space left by Babalou. Combining a traditionally stocked Spanish bar with dancing, broadcast sporting events and various forms of entertainment, it’s already attracting local attention as bands and DJs do their stuff into the early hours. Punters can soak up their Spanish beers and gutsy wines with some authentic Iberian small plates. As for the place itself, Gremio feels atmospherically deconsecrated, with sprawling brick arches, beat-up tables, lamps, religious pictures and a tiny Catholic shrine in one corner, complete with tapered candles and icons.
