The pub group behind similar ‘social’ ventures (Balham Bowls, Tooting Tram etc) have snapped up Brixton’s former Conservative Club, pitching it to a different party faithful. Comedy nights, live music, quizzes, craft fairs, camp bingo, disco dancing in the Club Room, and retro ‘cocktail and canapé’ shindigs are now part of the manifesto. Original decor appears to date back to Churchill’s youth, although a lounge bar named after him actually boasts ‘with-it’ touches circa Harold McMillan. Drink real ales, London microbrews and affordable wines while nibbling on sausage rolls and Scotch eggs. Otherwise graduate to the restaurant, where Private Eye covers line the walls and a roster of multicultural dishes vie for your vote – think wild mushroom risotto, salmon with pak choi in a Thai broth, rib-eye and chips, beef stew and Earl Grey cheesecake with G&T jelly.
