Square Meal Review of Portside Parlour ?

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! If you can find it, this basement pop-up is a cool night-owl’s bunker. First, locate Off Broadway, a popular haunt on Broadway Market, then make as if to spend a penny, flush and…. hello sailor! Welcome to a cosy, candlelit take on Jack Sparrow’s cabin, where 30 is a squeeze. Set up in collaboration with Appleton Estate, it offers over 50 sorts of rum combined with a soundtrack of blues and rock ’n’ roll. From £8, choose from a selection of grogs, cups, punches, slings, daiquiris and just about any other style of drink that fits the pirate’s preferred tot; also check out the hot buttered rum, served from copper kettles for two to share. Spirit-shy landlubbers will also find beers from Kernel and Hackney’s own microbrewery.

If you didn't know it was there, you would never suspect, but I did and so with determination we made our way through the crowds in Off Broadway to the very back where there was a sign pointing you down the stairs. Had the door been shut down there, even then you might not have been certain you were going to a bar, as the door makes it look like it's just another toilet. If you go through that though you enter a bijou little den of drinking, with candlelight and a musky illicit aroma. Just my kind of place...

    The List :: Portside Parlour

    PortSide Parlour is a pop-up rum bar below Off Broadway on Broadway Market, with the entrance disguised as a toilet cubicle - pulling the chain opens the door. We sadly didn't get a chance to enter in style as there was a constant flow of people in and out of the door...
