Square Meal Review of Attendant ?

‘Hidden espresso bar in abandoned toilet’ is quite a PR headline, but that’s what caffeine-loving visitors can expect at Attendant – a cannily converted, Victorian gentleman’s convenience in the heart of Fitzrovia. The old Doulton porcelain urinals have been plugged and reformed as a line of seats, while the original attendant’s office is now a tiny kitchen dispensing Gloucester Old Spot bacon sarnies for breakfast along with hearty 20oz granola tubs, juices and cakes from Bittersweet Bakers. Lunchtime callers can tuck into sweet things and NYC deli-inspired sandwiches (sliced and sold by weight) plus a choice of no-mayo coleslaw, German potato salad, homemade pickles or fresh farm greens, to go with various coffees (made with hand-roasted beans from Caravan in King’s Cross). Takeaways and teas too.

the good londoner :: The Attendant

The Attendant is a coffee bar located in a former men’s toilets in Fitzrovia. Given the potentially gimmicky nature caused by its former use, you would forgive the owners if they produced second-rate fare, but it’s really well done, and the only smell is of the delicious food and coffee on offer. It’s tiny, as you would expect, seating maybe 15 people, but doesn’t feel claustrophobic. Most of the seating is at stools at the individual urinals, but there’s one table at the back which you’re inevitably going to have to share...

Over the Hype :: The Attendant

With the sun shining and a spring in our step, we hit Foley Street, a stop by for an unusual late morning brew just before the lunchtime rush. Expecting to be drinking coffee and eating chocolate muffins out of squatting toilets, the images of Modern Toilet has corrupted my mind even before stepping foot into The Attendant. Big mistake. It’s unfair to compare the two as they have completely different vibes, just like how you wouldn’t compare M&M flavours. The Attendant has a sophisticated feel with the majority of its customers be on their suit and tie from the neighbouring Goodge Street offices looking to stretch their legs. On the other hand, customers are probably thrill seekers drawn to the fun and disturbing nature of its Taiwanese counterpart...
