Square Meal Review of Bird of Smithfield ?

After a 20-year spell at The Ivy (and elsewhere), chef Alan Bird decided to fly the coop and launch this ‘grown-up’ five-storey megalith opposite Smithfield Market. The first-floor restaurant is a cosy, inoffensively designed room offering sophisticated comfort food with an erudite British accent and lots of pretty floral garnishes: beetroot with goats’ curd, cobnuts and ruby leaves is a showcase of contrasting flavours, while keenly priced mains feature some very fine cooking – from a faultless dish of chicken ‘three ways’ (roast breast, slow-cooked thigh, offal salad) to Torbay slip soles with mace-spiced shrimps, sea beet and sea purslane. The chef’s much-loved shepherd’s pie also appears, while old-fashioned puds include fruit-laden sherry trifle – with Bird’s custard, of course. Staff are eager to please and the place is fun, although it sometimes feels ‘more about the conversation than the food’.

  1. Despite opening in the middle of 2013, Bird of Smithfield was yet to make my list. Lots told me this place was unlikely to deliver against my hunger for veg focused dining. First, It’s location across from Smithfields Market. Being Masterminded by Alan Bird (exec chef at the Ivy for 15 years) and that it’s positioning as a membership free members club, both further pointers. But when I was asked along by two Gloucestershire ladies, I thought I’d put my apprehension aside for what promised to be a fun night...

Samphire and Salsify :: Bird of Smithfield

Located slap bang opposite Smithfield Market, Bird of Smithfield is a restaurant and bar which is partly owned by head chef Alan Bird, who was previously head chef at The Ivy, something which is clear when looking at the menu. Set in a Georgian townhouse, the whole place felt like a private members club as it was spread over five floors, with a restaurant, private dining room, bar and a roof terrace. Late on a Friday evening we popped in for a spot of dinner and the place was surprisingly quiet. The dining room was a lot smaller than I imagined...

  3. Move over "Dude Food", Modern British seems to be taking over the London restaurant landscape. With a glut of chefs seemingly moving on from the old school British institutions such as the Ivy and St John, we see them trying to reinvent themselves and embrace what they love most. This can only be a good thing. At Bird, an ex Soho House alumni, expect the best of British produce updated in it's elegant upstairs dining room. Settling on Bird for my birthday lunch with one of my oldest friends, we enjoyed some elegant to some frankly excellent dishes...

  4. We booked a table at Bird of Smithfield on a Friday night and after an impromptu walk around the block (damn you Google maps!), we found our way to the restaurant. It’s split over five floors in an old Georgian Townhouse. The bar is on the ground floor with the dining rooms and roof terrace (overlooking Smithfield market) above. When we eventually arrived, we were warmly greeted and shown up to the first floor dining room...

Saying it straight :: Bird Of Smithfield

The restaurant is in Smithfield, in a former pub. You wouldn’t know that though. In the basement, the Birdcage, a nightclub-style bar; on the ground floor a casual café space where you can order small plates of food or just a coffee; on the first floor, the main restaurant; on the second a private, sophisticated, dining room with a separate seating area and on the top, an open roof garden. Something for everyone...
