Sam Harrison’s new basement bar majors on butch cocktails, in contrast to the frothier ideas served at his ground-floor brasserie. The decor is similarly masculine – although its mix of smoky mirrors, black banquette booths, washed brick and distressed timber cladding set to a soundtrack of Woodstock-era soft rock could do with more visual oomph. Par-for the-course mixed drinks include various old fashioneds, a gin, lychee and sparkling rosé flute, and after-dinner ideas such as affogato martini (Wyborowa vodka, coffee, butterscotch schnapps and vanilla cream). The late-twenty/thirtysomething crowd can also pick from more than a dozen affordable wines by the glass, carafe and bottle, while beers range from Meantime to Asahi. Bar bites will be available from March. Overall, this place is fine as a local drop-in, but whether its pulling power will extend beyond SW12 is moot.
