Sitting in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, family-run Rucoletta (formerly Rucola) has been delivering good, honest trattoria food for more than 30 years and still manages to satisfy. The sleek, modern dining room is pleasant enough (if a little ‘basic’), but charming service and ‘excellent’ cooking seal the deal. The kitchen makes its own pasta (try the semolina-based scialatielli or twisted trofie with squid, courgettes, white wine and lemon sauce), while mains might run from lamb shank with raisins, crispy leeks and Marsala sauce to cod on pesto mash with cherry-tomato salsa. Antipasti, risottos and traditional desserts such as tiramisu complete the offer. Set menus offer terrific value (£9.95 for two courses) and Rucoletta is now open for breakfast from 7.30am.
