Square Meal Review of Barrio East ?

Having staked out its territory in Angel and Soho, Barrio has brought its full-on fiesta good times to the cool kids of Shoreditch. Shantytown-chic is writ large across a corrugated-iron ceiling crawling with plastic vines, while rough-hewn wooden booths and blazing neon signs are shaken and stirred with a hefty shot of bright carnival colour. Cocktails – in jam jars – fuel the fun, with switched-on young staff knocking out the likes of ‘ron mocha boca’ (an X-rated chocolate milkshake made with rum, marzipan, coffee and cream). You can also lay down a solid foundation for the night with bite-sized empanadas, pork belly and plantain skewers, and shot glasses of spanking-fresh prawn ceviche. The ‘Downtown’ dance floor rocks to DJ beats, revving it up towards the end of the week; otherwise chill out in the Studio 54-esque ‘Uptown’ back bar.

A London Thing :: Barrio East

Barrio East ... is a bar which has everything! From its multiple bars, hidden in little nooks you have to explore to get a full flavor of the place. There is a great terrace/garden at the back, where you can hide out if you want to get some air...

We were invited to Barrio East, the new restaurant in the Barrio chain, which has just opened in Shoreditch. We have been for happy hour in the Soho establishment but it never crossed our minds that they would do food in the happy hour rush. Anyway we had an invite for brunch – Barrio East is a Latin American joint that tries to capture the enthusiasm, honesty and colour that is associated with this continent...

  3. The newest of the three is Barrio East. They opened back in November and started the brunch a few months back. It’s the only one with a full menu, as Barrio Central only do some tapas. The chef in charge is Beatriz Maldonado, Colombian born, took her time traveling around Latin American, learning and improving recipes. Now as a head chef of Barrio East she is giving us traditional cuisine in a balanced menu that is a culinary journey through the region...

  4. Those creative thinkers have pulled out another stop introducing Shoreditch to the Barrio family as I found out recently having attended the VIP opening for their latest addition – Barrio East. The dying crappy “nothing bar” Avalon had finally been shut down (cue cheers all round, really was a weird place), the underground brothel walls were knocked through and bright sunshine paint and South American fusion music entered in its place to infuse Shoreditch High Street into a way of socialising that Poland and Upper Street have already embraced...
