‘It’s not fine dining, but as a sexy, indulgent metropolitan restaurant, Social Eating House is streets ahead of everywhere else’, noted a fan of all-conquering Jason Atherton’s Soho outpost – a deliberately ‘cool’ humdinger and winner of this season’s BMW Square Meal Award for the best new restaurant. With its quirky portraits, Victorian curios, blue neon and gilded mirrors advertising steaks and sundaes, this is low-key media-land hip cranked up a notch or two. Ex-Pollen Street Social chef Paul Hood is tuned into the vibe and his tight seasonal menu is leavened with fashionable ingredients – consider a dramatic plate of micro-sliced octopus carpaccio with orange grenobloise and black-olive oil, home-smoked duck ‘ham’ with a crispy soft-boiled egg and chips or roast cod with kombu seaweed, chanterelles, baby gem and cockles (‘innovation without tears’). Meanwhile, brilliant desserts mix lip-smacking comfort with fancy-pants deconstructions: the tingling lemon curd pie with sour yoghurt sorbet and fennel comes highly recommended. Upstairs, The Blind Pig feeds Soho’s voracious appetite for cocktails.
