Tucked away just off Fetter Lane, Grappolo is an inviting mix of ‘nicely dressed’ bare tables, dark woods and banquettes with a long bar stretching along one side; at lunchtime it bustles, while evening brings a more atmospheric mood as the lights are dimmed. The cooking has some regional overtones, moving from ‘nicely presented’ antipasti via linguine with prawns and courgettes in saffron sauce or risotto with Modena-style sausage, peas and tomatoes to ‘secondi’ such as chicken milanese or sirloin steak with green peppercorn sauce. Desserts bring tiramisu, tarts and cheesecake, while the wine list is a mixed bag from Italy, France and the New World. Grappolo also has its own deli/café dispensing breakfasts and daytime fill-ups for City workers on the go; fresh pasta is a fixture, alongside various Italian paninis, wraps and good old English sarnies.
