Square Meal Review of Shebeen ?

‘Shebeens’ were cloth-cap drinking premises where illicit whiskey was clandestinely peddled in Ireland of yore. After a trip around the globe, the idea has re-surfaced in NW5 as an intriguing addition to the popular Kentish Canteen. Inside, it looks like a cross between a 20s Chicago speakeasy and a Northern supperclub circa Showaddywaddy, but this candlelit dive is entirely above board. Legal hooch includes a range of classic cocktails at £6.50, so cosy up in the snug little nook (former police holding cells) with a Singapore sling, English julep or dark and stormy (the rum and ginger-beer mule popular at 1950s West Indian shebeens in Notting Hill and Brixton). Also available are highly potent authentic Irish poitins (once illegal), fizz, wines by the glass, and various London ales and porters including local representatives from the Camden Town Brewery.
