Square Meal Review of The Fable ?

If Simon Cowell put together bars not bands, they might just look like a Drake & Morgan venue. Ticking all the trendy boxes, planned with military precision and remorselessly executed, down to the last quirky fashion detail, The Fable is the latest D&M vehicle off a whimsically styled, postmodernist production line that includes City hits such as The Drift, The Happenstance and The Folly. Theatrical, buzzy, young, full-on and fun, this cleverly contrived venue is the perfect party venue for birthdays, bar mitzvahs and more besides: bathtub cocktails to share, fairy tale concoctions such as Aesop’s fable and flowery godmother (a floral gin mojito), oh-so-pretty edible garnishes, boutique beers, mixology classes, a flower shop and crowd-pleasing bar bites ranging from ‘meat liquor’ ribs and cutlets to ‘life is too short to be shellfish’ boards... it has the lot.

Wrap Your Lips Around This :: The Fable

This fairy-tale inspired bar is located in a converted office block in the Holborn Viaduct; not perhaps the first place that you might associate with whimsy and romance but somehow fitting for this age. Behind the shiny sheath is an interior to be wooed by, stretching across three cavernous floors and replete with plump, brass pinned and moss-hued leather seats. Novels and blowsy glass figurines adorn the wall-to-wall bookcases and ferns hang from the ceiling. Created by Drake & Morgan (The Folly, The Parlour, The Anthologist and The Refinery), The Fable bestows a peaceful hearth away from the realities of the outside world, with good food and drink to boot. Fillet steak is ordered with caution, but the hesitation proves undue. It is with first surprise and then quiet contentment that the steak is received; a knife pressed gently to the flesh gives more than an inch before finally cutting into its buttery insides...

Foodie Force :: The Fable Restaurant Holborn

When I heard that in a land far far away, Drake and Morgan had created a brand new restaurant in fairy tales and fables of Aesop well I just had to visit.Walking to the restaurant is a bit like entering a secret world. Trundling across Holborn viaduct (a road bridge in London) which I have to say has been beautiful restored in vibrant red, gold and silver, I spot The Fable restaurant over the head of a fire breathing dragon.                         From the exterior you could easily mistake Fable for a corporate office block but looks can be very deceiving. Down a windy staircase from the bridge you begin to see glimpses of the wonderful thought that has gone into designing this restaurant.            When inside the interior doesn't disappoint either set across three floors this restaurant is vast. The beautiful fairy tale bar and seating Fable really impresses on design.         Some novel arrangements around the restaurant. Sorry for the bad pun but I couldn't resist. We are seated at a big long table on elevated chairs. The drink menu is vast with an almighty selection to choose from. Pages of cocktails (mojito, daiquiri martinis and fairtale cocktails) wine and spirits. The sharing cocktails look amazing and very theatrical: Rub a dub shrub - hook a duck at bath time, with snow queen vodka, fresh watermelon juice, homemade strawberry vinegar, strawberries and bubbling bath time suds. Goldfish in a bag - served in a goldfish bag. Take home a tipsy fish. With gin, vodka, rhubarb, pink grapefruit, 'fish', tonic and edible Lilly pads.  So whilst we peruse over the menu we opt for Zombie Land cocktails. Two is enough, three is too many ... four and you will be walking like the undead. Either that or you will be under the table. It is served from a bath ... and it is mighty potent. The menu at The Fable is vast and has lots of varied food options to suit every taste, burgers, fresh seafood, seasonal salads and steak. But Sundays mean only one thing to me. A good lie in and a lovely Sunday roast.         Sadly this is where the positives finish. I always thought no one could ruin a Sunday roast; well I was wrong. The beef was cooked well, but the vegetables definitely were not al dente, with more chance you would need a dentist. It's a shame that the Yorkshire puddings were also swimming in fat. Service whilst friendly, was unbelievably slow and left you constantly hunting for a member of staff which after a while became really frustrating and ruined the dining experience. The Fable has only just opened so I am sure the above small issues can be resolved quickly. It is so annoying when a restaurant has so much going for it that it could be an excellent place to eat and drink but at the moment it is definitely style over substance. Hopefully Fable will recruit more staff to serve the many dinners. The menu is vast and less is more sometimes. I would definitely prefer a few less dishes cooked well than lots potentially cooked badly. Give this place a few months and if you are looking for a restaurant near Holborn I would certainly give it another try even if it is just to bathe in a cocktail. @thefablebarwww.thefablebar.co.uk52 Holborn ViaductLondonEC1A 2FDTel: 0845 468 0105 [email protected]

A Table For Two :: The Fable

Farringdon, never a go to destination for dining out in London has recently stamped itself on the food map with numerous openings in the area. The latest being The Fable. The latest Drake and Morgan restaurant bar has transformed a bleak office space into an enchanted land themed restaurant which sports more greenery than your local garden centre. Split between a large bar and two floors of dining space, The Fable has created a more accommodating dining destination than it’s sister sites where the bar may take a little more precedence. Nonetheless, the bar vibe is still strong here with live DJ’s covering the busy evenings...

  4. Once upon a time in London, two ladies decided they were overdue a proper catch up over nibbles and cocktails. They wanted to stay clear of their usual haunts in Soho so after a few hours of to-ing and fro-ing, they found themselves at The Fable, the latest addition to the Drake & Morgan family of bars and restaurants. I didn't know The Fable was a D&M establishment until I stepped inside and felt the same vibe I get at The Folly or at The Anthologist...

Kavey Eats :: No Magical Tales To Tell at Fable

I really wanted to like Fable Bar & Restaurant. I really, really did. But it wasn’t to be. The venue takes inspiration from “fairy tales and the fabulous fables of Aesop” and is described as an all-day bar and restaurant and event space. It is certainly an attractively decorated venue, spread across three floors. There are fairy-tale touches from walls papered with pages of books to a glass bell jar over a pair of shoes filled with succulents. And there’s lots and lots of light spilling in from enormous windows. Much of the seating on the top floor is at tall bench tables with tall stools to match, but if (like me) you prefer regular tables and chairs, there are plenty on the other two floors...

Not Quite Enough :: The Fable Bar review

I can't remember how I came across the fact that Drake and Morgan were opening a new bar and restaurant, The Fable Bar (they currently have six others across the city) but when I did find out, I was excited to know more. I've previously been to The Drift (located at the bottom of the Heron Tower) for drinks after work and so the opening of another of their venues located conveniently in Holborn, between mine and my boyfriend's work was appealing to me. Even better? They were going to have a soft launch offering 50% off food. So I signed up to the mailing list and booked a table for last Thursday night...
