A former meat-carcass cold store is the location for this dinky dive bar beneath Polpo Smithfield. It may be pristine white and air-conditioned, but any cellar where 20-plus guests equals a tight squeeze is not for the claustrophobic. Drop in for a post-work sharpener or a cocktail while you wait for a table to become available in the busy bácaro above. Drinks-wise, the clue is in the name: negroni is the thing at the piccolo bar counter. Comprising equal parts gin (only Sipsmith and Beefeater 24 are offered here), Campari and sweet vermouth, this fortified post-World War I invention is a cousin of the Americano – one of various Italian favourites and global familiars such as Aperol spritz and Moscow mule on offer here. Moretti beer and various bitter/fizzy soft drinks complete the miniature picture.
