Unpromisingly located beneath a branch of Subway in a boring brick building, Rouge comes as a surprising pop of bright colour in ever-diverse Smithfield. All plush scarlet banquettes, matching pouffes and lurid flock, loungey Rouge offers the chance to admire a bevy of burlesque beauties such as Peggy de Lune, Coco du Bois and similarly saucy demoiselles strutting their stuff. Cocktails and mocktails range from Dita Von Teese (Cointreau, apple and lemon juice, blue Curaçao and ginger) to pornstar martini and virgin Mary, while a basic 10-bin wine list peaks at £42 for the house Champagne (St Evremond). When les filles are taking the weight off their marabou mules, musicians and DJs play: expect anything from big band to current dance tracks. Sushi may be ordered from a nearby restaurant, and a £10 cover charge applies at most times.
