Pitched on one of Soho’s busiest alleyways, this branch of Fernandez & Wells moves easily from daytime espresso bar and café to evening wine bar – although carefully selected and properly brewed coffee is the stuff that holds it all together. At breakfast, take your chosen cup with a buttery croissant or grilled pancetta with egg mayo in a ciabatta bun; later on, cakes and other sugary confections hit the sweet spot, while lunch might bring a bowl of soup, a gutsy stew or something like grilled chorizo with roasted red peppers. Platters of charcuterie and cheese are always good sellers, along with rustic-style bocadillos (Spanish-style ‘sandwiches’) – but be prepared to queue if it’s busy. In the evening, try something similar or go for a warming raclette accompanied by a bottle from the zesty European wine list.
