From its dark wood panelling and black-and-white tile flooring to its Gallic-leaning menu, this Portobello Road bistro has been designed by someone who knows how to create a successful neighbourhood fixture. The casual vibe is pitched just right, but it's the kitchen's innovative food and roster of daily specials that steal the show. Lunchtime plates of beautifully presented, creamy goats' curd bruschetta or lightly spiced crab and French onion soup fit the bill for a well-proportioned fill-up, while hungrier visitors might follow on with a bavette steak accompanied by marrow bone and fat, crispy chips or something from the chalkboards – slow-roast pork with pineapple and has chorizo impressed. For desserts, Eton Mess with lemon posset is a delight. France rules on the wine list.
