Striped wallpaper, lampshades shaped like bowler hats, tartan tabletops, louche boudoir trappings and Euro-pop coming out of the speakers – Sushi des Artistes is definitely not your run-of-the-mill Japanese joint. Born in Marbella, this London outpost promises ‘a touch of romance’, backed by a huge menu and a litany of dishes that sound more like wacky cocktails – ‘kiss 50/50’, anyone? The result is a polyglot repertoire that soaks up influences from France and beyond, loads its offer with luxurious ingredients, and goes way beyond nigiri and sashimi. It’s not everyone’s cup of saké, but who could resist ‘mind-blowing’, stunningly presented creations such as ‘emozioni’ (spinach, mushroom and tofu ravioli in coconut velouté), ‘the look of love’ (slow-cooked duck breast with grated foie gras sauce) or ‘stars in the night’ (chocolate and mascarpone terrine with orange chilli).
