The owners of Hammersmith’s veggie icon The Gate have brought their wares to EC1 with a second, clean-lined branch opposite Sadler’s Wells Theatre. Indo/Iraqi/Jewish brothers, Michael and Adrian Daniel, are renowned for their cross-cultural, globally inspired food: spinach, feta and artichoke tart with olive tapenade; pickled fennel, cucumber and quinoa salad with goji berries and pomegranate; chipotle-spiked wild mushrooms with Black Venus rice and samphire; green-vegetable laksa with water chestnuts and aubergine won tons – no veggie blandness here. Desserts are slightly more conservative – fruit trifle, rosewater and pistachio pannacotta, chocolate and orange steamed pudding, say. Also look out for daily set deals aimed at the lunch and theatre crowd, weekend brunch, an all-day mezze bar menu and an eclectic wine list bristling with enterprising organic, biodynamic and vegan bottles.
