A ‘gastronomic and cultural space’ with a Spanish accent, Trangallán is housed in a disused Stoke Newington social club that has been filled with vintage furniture from auction rooms, markets and fairs. Everything here is also for sale, if you fancy putting in an offer for some cutlery or the chairs you’re sitting on. The ground floor is a tapas hangout, where you can graze your way through traditional tortillas, salt cod in tomato sauce, gutsy carrilleras (a stew of pig’s cheeks) with savoy cabbage, plates of jamón ibérico and more fashionable delights such as scallop sashimi with parsnip purée. The Spanish-led drinks list features some interesting ‘natural’ wines and exclusive, ‘limited edition’ sherries (courtesy of Gonzalez Byass). Tranga’s dinky basement is given over to regular live music, film screenings, cabaret, flamenco and other events.
By no means the largest selection of Spanish wines, but the Trangallán list has real personality and focus, happy to eschew safe options and put its money on quirkier choices. You’ll find a few wines from Italy and France, but the real star is here is the enthusiastic line-up of sherries. Simply executed but with a clear vision, this is an excellent list.
