Café Gourmand is a little haven of nouveau-rustic French charms aimed squarely at the mobile Soho crowd – an endearing drop-in with a few stools by the high counter, a big communal table at the back and a couple of berths outside. Food revolves around ready-made staples in display cabinets, plus a blackboard menu of Gallic classics, breakfasts and snacks for those on the go – think croque monsieur, tartines (open sandwiches), soupe à l’oignon and more substantial offerings in the mould of cassoulet or coq au vin. After that, crème brûlée, French apple tart, chocolate mousse and other dainty treats hit the sweet spot, while Monmouth Coffee provides the obligatory caffeine fix. There are plans to open in the evening sometime soon.
