If this East End boozer wasn’t pitched on Columbia Road’s main drag (site of the famous flower market), it would probably have long since become flats or offices. However, the old place lives on and it’s slowly moving from dodgy Del Boy boozer to somewhere more suited to the young, middle-class women who now run it. Let’s hope the arrival of Doom Bar spells curtains for the inferior beer still on the pumps – although Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are likely to prove more popular with the new demographic. Plans envisage a dining room upstairs by late 2012, but for now food is limited to free cockles and prawns on the bar at the weekends, and plates of corned beef sarnies for lively karaoke sessions. Pools and quiz nights (Tuesday) are also part of the appeal.
