This subterranean Mexican impersonates a sex shop at street level, but make it past the bouncer and you'll find a dining room convincingly tricked out as an atmospheric wine cellar, with flickering lamps, peeling plaster and barrel-filled alcoves – courtesy of restaurateurs Will Ricker (E&O et al) and Serge Becker (New York's La Esquina). The Tequila bar offers winningly flavoured margaritas, while the kitchen dispatches ‘fun' sharing plates that are ‘more sex-mex than Tex-Mex' – from chilli-hot steak tacos and crab tostaditas to tender chicken paillard lathered in punchy mole sauce or gargantuan Madagascan prawns brushed with garlicky butter. Celebs abound, service is swift – if sometimes ‘disorganised' – and the timelessly cool soundtrack keeps feet tapping. The bill might raise eyebrows, but you're paying for the electric atmosphere. Upstairs (and around the corner) is a café dispensing cocktails and greatest hits from the restaurant menu.

But fortune favours the brave, and once you go down the unassuming stairway, the cellar opens up to reveal a lively space. I really loved the atmosphere and decor of the place. A macabre blend of SoHo, NYC (where the original branch is located) and Soho, London, it has a kind of Bohemian Day of the Dead feel, which matches the modern Mexican tapas menu...

the grumbling gourmet :: La Bodega Negra - Mexi-can! Aug 2012
On a sultry Soho night, the office Joes and Olympic trippers trooping down Old Compton hardly notice Kate Moss extinguish her cigarette and stalk back into the sex shop. Is it that regular round here to see a supermodel (retired) in a sex shop? Given the in crowd's current predilection for hip Mexican La Bodega Negra, hidden behind the porny facade, it's probably not that unusual dahling.Following Kate down the staircase to this modish modern Mexican is a crowd definitely more Chelsea than Soho, beautiful blonde embassy types squired by ex Bullingdon Clubbers. This isn't entirely a bad thing. They bray less when they're out of their comfort zone and here just provide a slightly well-to-do wallpaper...
