Brasserie Le Saint Julien

A personally run brasserie of the old school, Le Saint Julien parades its gilt finishes, mirrors, elegant retro lighting & traditional wood bar with genuine Gallic pride – assisted by dapper French waiters in full-dress black aprons. The mood is noticeably warm & congenial (given the ultra-cool Clerkenwell location), & the food stays with the ingrained traditions of escargots de bourgogne, confit de canard & suprême de poulet farci. Menus are written in French with English translations, & it’s possible to eat affordably if you stay with the prix-fixe deals: £24.95 might pay for goats’ cheese in filo pastry with balsamic dressing followed by roast rump of lamb with crushed potatoes, basil & rosemary jus. The cheeseboard is a must, & the food is matched by a creditable list of bourgeois regional wines.
