Set in the ME Hotel on The Strand, the London branch of New York-based beefy chain STK follows the glossy style of its Manhattan Meatpacking original – with slinky black booths, theatrical lighting and a banging soundtrack to get groups in a party mood. Don't come here for an intimate tête-à-tête – or with a small appetite, as hand-cut slabs of Prime Grade USDA beef are the main attraction. Velvety fillet steak arrives with punchy signature STK sauce, or you can pick indulgent toppings such as black truffle and lobster. Elsewhere the wide-ranging menu is bolstered by seafood from the raw bar, though the results can be inconsistent – rich foie gras on French toast with sharp apple and sage purée outshines ‘tasteless' crab salad, while crisp, fluffy parmesan truffle chips are preferable to a ‘flat' Yorkshire pudding. STK's luxury ingredients come at a price, and service shows cracks at busy times.

little swallow : china doll :: STK, Aldwych
Guess who got a little bit older this weekend? The gorgeous CG. He requested a smart blazer for his "last splurge birthday present" before we get serious about oh, I dunno, maybe saving for a house or a car or something of worth. So after a few hours wandering (successfully) through Selfridges working up an appetite, it was time to really celebrate...

I went to STK expecting to hate everything about it. Even the name with its missing vowels bothered me – do you pronounce it S.T.K or Steak? Located in the new ME Hotel in Holborn, this American export with branches in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and New York; this branch certainly is a looker! White leather, marble and chrome make it more bachelor pad than ladies boudoir though and that was the target market they were aiming for, according to their Twitter page and website...

On paper STK was everything we dislike in a restaurant. Starting with the name. There must be a few dodgy keyboards out there in the restaurant world at the moment that are missing their vowels. STK is an American import, with restaurants in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and Miami. But the main thing that put us off (but also intrigued us at the same time) is the whole ‘female-friendly’ ethos that was in their Twitter bio (this has since changed). On the website they have the tag-line ‘Not your Daddy’s steakhouse!’ I am female, although I think my brain is actually about 60% male, and the last thing I want to hear when I go to a restaurant is that it’s female- friendly. Plus there is a DJ. In a restaurant. This I really wasn’t sure about either.
