Square Meal Review of Lima ?

Peruvian legend Virgilio Martinez blazed into London with a heavyweight CV and a determination to add some Michelin-starred glitter to his native cuisine. ‘Pleasingly plump’ sea-bream ceviche continues to garner praise, alongside combos such as Amazon fish with seaweed butter and sumptuous suckling pig with giant corn, cress and piquillo pepper. Knowledgeable waiters are on hand to demystify more arcane dishes – not least, the unmissable dulce de leche ice cream with beetroot emulsion and Andean maca root. Despite ‘minuscule’ portions, this is ‘excitingly different’ food prepared with skill, while the dining room is more casual than the lofty prices might suggest. ‘Fairly cramped’, spartan surrounds and some Aztec echoes define the mood, although informally dressed staff add some jokey good humour to proceedings.

    the chic brulee :: Lima Restaurant, London

    This weekend my husband and I checked out Lima, a Michelin-starred Peruvian restaurant in Fitzrovia. I had high expectations for Latin American chef Virgilio Martinez’s London restaurant after reading some above average critic reviews and having a bit of trouble getting a primetime reservation (persistence on TopTable is key). We had an 8:30 p.m. friday night table and while I initially envisioned a dark, buzzy and lively scene, it was quiet and bright, and everything from the ambience to the service fell a little flat. All that aside, we were there to dine, so I was willing to forgive all of that if the food was extraordinary. Our waiter was friendly and helped us with a few recommendations, which I always appreciate. We were served an assortment of two soft seeded breads, with a whipped yoghurt dip and a second oil dip with a sweet syrup on the bottom. Both breads and dips were delicious and light enough to keep us excited (and hungry) for the actual meal...

    Munch My Way :: Lima, Fitzrovia

    Lima, located just right behind the buzzling Tottenham Court Road, offers Peruvian cuisine to the already diverse eating scene of London. Lima food is created by Chef Virgilio Martinez who also is the owner of Central in Lima, Peru which made the list of San Pellegrino’s 50 best restaurant in the world and voted #4 of the Latin America best restaurant. Lima has just been awarded 1 Michelin Star and was not surprised why.. The food approach is about authenticity, seasonality and freshness...

    The Swindian :: Restaurant review: Lima

    It’s not often I go to a Michelin-starred restaurant. In fact, there have only been two occasions, one of which was before my blog started, at Arbutus, and the other was a very good value deal at Yauatcha. I was really looking forward to going to Lima, as I had no idea what Peruvian cuisine consisted of, and I had been reading a lot about it, as it has just been awarded its first Michelin star...

    Livelifelovecake :: Lima, London

    In my eyes, food should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, in adequate amounts and enough to leave you feeling satisfied yet not overly full. It must look good and taste good with style and substance playing equal roles. I was instantly drawn to Peruvian restaurant Lima when it opened its doors in June last year, after seeing beautifully looking photos circulating online. The reviews that followed were just as stunning as the photographs and when they were awarded with their very first Michelin star I knew I just had to visit. There was just one issue, finding someone like me who prefers the small pretty portions offered by Lima over a massive burger and chips. This certainly isn’t Sam, but I felt a need to open his eyes to the world of fine dining, so I offered to foot the bill in return for his company...

    Samphire and Salsify :: Lima

    I’d heard good things about Lima, a Peruvian restaurant in Fitzrovia, so was excited for our dinner there with a group of friends. I wasn’t familiar with the cuisine of Peru but was expecting very pretty plates of food with big bold flavours and that’s exactly what we got...

    Tiki Chris :: Lunch at Lima: Wow.

    Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez’s much lauded London outpost, Lima, has just received its first Michelin star – and the first one ever granted to a Latin restaurant in Europe. Guess who was lucky enough to enjoy a leisurely lunch there the day after the big announcement? Yep. And I loved every last bite of it too. So how’s this for delicious timing? My booking for lunch at Lima perfectly coincided with the fine dining restaurant’s first full day after being announced as a recipient of a Michelin star. I hadn’t even realised Michelin was going to announce its list for 2014 when I arranged to go. I had planned my visit to try the restaurant’s special Taste of Brazil dish of arapaima, an Amazonian river fish, served with tapioca and palm heart...

    vialaporte :: Lima // Fitzrovia // London

    Lima is a restaurant that has given London something completely new. With its Peruvian flavours and ingredients, it’s playful bright plating, its enthused and charming service – it all comes together to create an exceptional dining experience that you won’t have been expecting. While you kick-off with a passion fruit pisco sour, you’ll need some time to digest the inventive flavour combinations on the menu...

  8. We went to Lima on a Monday lunchtime, the restaurant was fairly quiet but we did start early at around midday, it had started to fill as we were leaving, mainly couples, not the office crowds I was expecting. The waiter must be mentioned, he is incredibly helpful and explained everything on the menu, which was a great help because quite frankly, none of it made any sense, it would have been a game of roulette otherwise...

    Saying it straight :: Lima.

    Very fashionable, Peruvian food. Almost a trend. Not only this, but Ceviche, and Tierra Peru, in Islington. And whilst at Ceviche, last week, Twitter, in that know-it-all way that it has, told me that I was in the wrong place. Go to Lima, it said, it’s much better. And having now done just that, I can tell you, helpfully that Twitter is right, but it is also wrong. They are both good and whilst there is indeed ceviche and tiger’s milk in the centre of the Ceviche/Lima Venn diagram, they are not, in my view, comparable. One is delicate fine-ish dining and the other is street food/relaxed...

  10. Peruvian food is one of my culinary passions and having had the pleasure to try world class, traditional ceviche at Sonia in Lima, the latest openings of Ceviche and Lima restaurants got me really excited. So my craving for Peruvian food found some good satisfaction with dinner at “Lima” in London. Lima: Pisco Sour Lima: Pisco Sour Virgilio Martinez and his team are dedicated to bring unique and organic produce from Peru, primarily the Andes and the Amazon to the plate. Sustainability is also one of their goals, so a lot of the ingredients are actually sourced in the UK...

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: Lima, Sept 2012

    There’s been a lot of hype around Peruvian restaurants opening in London recently. At the epicentre of it all is Lima restaurant. We decided to give it a try and quite frankly, we were blown away! Quite honestly we didn’t know what to expect from Lima. We knew that the head chef, Virgilio Martinez, hailed from good stock. Previously he worked at a top 50 San Pellegrino restaurant in Peru, called Astrid y Gaston, but we’d never been. However, based on the dishes we sampled at Lima, I can’t conclude other than: extremely good chef!...

    love2feed :: eat: lima

    One of the latest additions to Fitzrovia’s food haven. I’ve read so much buzz online about Lima by the online foodie community and positive affirmations from friends who had tried, tested and loved. This greatly helped my head spinning decision of where to take Him for his birthday, especially when there’s so many choices out there (I literally had 2 other restaurants booked which were cancelled at the last minute!). Plus, you must be in good hands when chef Virgilio Martinez has a list of culinary accolades next to his name – chef patron of Central, the #1 restaurant in Lima and Executive Chef at one of the San Pellegrino World’s Best Restaurants – Astrid y Gaston...

    LONDONcalling :: Lima

    Its not every week that a Peruvian restaurant opens in London. What makes this one stand out (apart from being Peruvian of course) is that the executive chef has previously worked at one of the Worlds 50 best restaurants.Virgilio Martinez was the former executive chef at Astrid y Gaston group and now has his own restaurant in Peru...

  14. LIMA is a newly open Peruvian restaurant oversee by the Executive Chef Virgilio Martinez along with the head chef, Robert Ortiz, both a bonafide Peruvian food extraordinaire, with years of experience under their belt. This cuisine is foreign to me and I have no idea what to expect other than the usual ubiquitos ceviche. Even after months of following them on the twitter since they launched the account; through their sessions after sessions of staff menu tasting photo teases, I'm still as clueless as to what will be on the menu. However, I was fascinated by this region's offerings since the opening of Ceviche, Soho, which I have still yet to managed to patron unfortunately. Which is why I took the plunge of making a reservation even before the restaurant was opened...
