Hidden away on a side street just a stroll from Tower Bridge, La Lanterna is a fixture of the Bermondsey scene & an ever-dependable choice when it comes to dishing up old-school trattoria food. Around 20 different pizzas take pride of place on the huge menu (try the avellino with asparagus, salame, olives, mozzarella & tomatoes), closely followed by pastas (including a big choice of seafood such as linguine with scallops in brandy & cream sauce). Classic antipasti, grills & time-honoured mains such as saltimbocca alla romana, beef tagliata & chicken cacciatore complete an ultra-familiar line-up. Quaffable Italian wines are topped up with a brace of interlopers from Chile. There are two agreeable dining rooms filled with classical statuettes, prints & artefacts – although Lanterna’s glorious Italianate courtyard is the real attraction in fine weather.
